Initial inspirational imagery

Below are initial images I came across whilst researching Parasitical Architecture i gathered the imagery in my reflective journal and annotated accordingly. (the images and annotation will follow).

rucksack house

The Rucksack House, Leipzig, 2004

one of the simpler forms of Parasitical Architecture composing of a cube with square and oblong windows. The varaition of window size and shape make the somewhat plain form more interesting to view and inhabit.

Stealth Shelters , Mairselle , 2013

modular steel cabins that create walkways and areas to walk and sit inside. I find the angular pointed form abstract and modern . The aspect of light and dark further enhances the exterior form emitting a yellow glow from within making a somewhat dark and brutal structure bright and softer

it utilizes the available space from above. The structure overhangs and connects to various parts of the existing  building . The alternate shaped windows mimck the undulating  and jagged exterior from (outer line) . The choice of black paneling makes the structure striking and bold compared to the more neutral earthy tones of the existing building and surrounding structures.

landscapehall

Landscapehall Manresa, Barcelona, 2008

The origami undulating style is bold and eyecatching. The form makes the space unique from multiple angles and views. The choice of materials and window placement continues to create different appearances using the varying light levels . The odd shaped windows ommit obsure patterns of shaddow and shapes on the ground at different points of day and night making this structure truly versatile and unique.

Homes for the Homeless, London, 2015

The natural looking pre frabricated pods connect to create a string of bird box shaped structures. I think the wooden cladding and reclaimed rustic aspect of the panelling marrys well with the traditonal brickwork of the adjoining building keeping the Vernacular athenticity of our traditonal methods and means.

Secret Studio, Valencia, 2017

It utilizes un used and invisble gaps that we dont normally notice or congregate. An underpass can be seen as a dark, unsafe and dingy area but this Parasitical Architecture illuminates the dark crevices making it a more welcoming and useful space. It provides a studio space and sleeping quaters for one to two people.

Pont-9-Stephane-Malka-1

Pont9 Bridge, Paris, 2014

The parasitical structure utilizes a section of a traditional bridge. The main structure is rectangular in form with protruding cuboid shaped pods in various shades of Red and Grey. I find the contrast between the old traditional archways of the bridge and the modern bright steel prefabricated pods mesmerising and what intitally drew me to this project.

Zalewski-Architecture-Group-twisted-walkway-lead

Balcony, Poland, 2015

The structure is unique it doesnt provide housing or interior space but a suspended walkway that offers a green space from above between two buildings. I find the form interesting from below and on top it’s interesting to view from all aspects and angles. It’s important to keep creating green spaces in this concrete jungle.

oase no 7

Oase no 7, Hamburg, 2014

The structural materiality is what drew me to this project. The ball is made of plastic sheeting with the use of air to inflate into a spherical form of which one person can inhabit. This Parasitical structure has travelled and been exhibited in multiple countries.

the green exhibition house

The Green Exhibition House, Rotterdam, 2001

The Parasitical structure links on to a cuboid concrete block that resides on the rooftop. From the front it looks as its perched cautiously on the top (part of the sky line). The bright Green instantly stands out compared to neutral metal tones of the building below. The Green colour links to the shade of typography on the exterior panelling tying itself into its environment.

manifest destiny

Manifest Destiny, San Francisco, 2012

The materiality is natural ,traditional and eye catching perched on the side of a high rise in a vast concrete jungle that is San Francisco. I like the reclaimed wood used in the panelling a stark juxtaposition to the large amounts of concrete, metal and glass. It looks like a tiny bird box for humans in  a hectic city.

parasite office moscow

Parasite Office, Moscow, 2011

*Similar to the project above found in Barcelona* As with the previous project the form is Geometric and Angular instantly striking compared to the simple square skyscraper buildings to either side. The structure appears to float in between the two buildings defying gravity (Accessible by a ladder to the front) .
